The “Broadcast Name” is what will actually be advertised over the air via a beacon. Under the SSID Usage section, you will see the various authentication types that can be used within this particular SSID. We want to create a basic WPA2 Personal SSID, so click on the “Personal” button. Private Pre-Shared Key is something similar to the standard WPA2 Personal authentication, but it uses multiple passphrases. If we were creating a guest network, we could click on “Guest Access Network” and it would give us a streamlined way to configure guest type SSIDs. For this particular post though, we just want to create a simple WPA2 Personal SSID which uses a standard passphrase.
You’re evil if you don’t match the VLAN ID numbers to the attribute numbers. The Aerohive AP’s run their own HiveOS which seems pretty decent in practice. The OS provides management and basic networking capabilities. I’ve seen some enterprises use Aerohive products that they’re happy with. In general HiveOS and related products are a good experience to manage.

The last line sets the allowed data rates for 802.11g connections. There’s one base data rate that counts as the minimum, and all the other values are allowed too. Connections on lower data rates take up more airtime than higher data rates to tranfser the same amount of traffic. Allowing data rates too low can mess up your wireless performance for all connected clients. For 802.11n data rate settings are not relevant because the protocol works in a different way.

As long as you have a license key, you can provision your own environment without having to wait on Aerohive to build out your environment for you. This option requires an entitlement key for each of your devices(e.g. AP, switch, router). The second option is referred to as HiveManager Connect. The difference between Connect and Select is that with Connect, you have far fewer configuration and management options.
This will allow you to access the switch via the web GUI to perform other settings and changes such as updating the firmware. The “Name ” field is simply the name of the SSID object as it will appear in HiveManager. If you hit the tab key or simply click on the “Broadcast Name” field below, it will duplicate whatever you typed in on the “Name ” field.

You also will have to use the forums on the Aerohive HiveCommunity sitefor support. There are options to have phone support with HiveManager Connect if desired. With HiveManager Select, you have ALL options available in HiveManager as well as 24×7 web and phone support. After doing all this configuration, the example on GitHub still has some remaining config lines left that I’ve not discussed here. Most of them are self-explanatory, like the NTP and DNS lines.
I didn’t lose any more config again but I’m still paranoid. I did them via TFTP after having the AP’s live in my wireless network already. I was working via wireless from my laptop and first upgraded the first AP, followed by a reboot. When it came back, I did the same thing to the second AP. The roaming made sure my laptop stayed online during the entire procedure so that was cool to see. The firmware version containing the fix for KRACK for these models is 6.5r8a.

This comes from the Authentication column of “2 – Configure Interfaces and User Accounts” under “Network Configuration.” So the more SSIDs with User Groups, the more the AP must store. After clicking on “PERFORM UPDATE”, HiveManager will start to push the delta update to the AP. Once it is done, the red exclamation point will be replaced with a green check mark. When you see that green check mark, you know the configuration on HiveManager is in sync with the configuration on the AP.

If a device has connected to the SSID, the MAC address will attach to the Username the device used the first time it connected to the network. Hivemanager isn't free, so I would just connect it up, put on a basic configuration, then disconnect it. It should just keep running although you won't be able to change much. There is a good community AeroHive forum you could also ask on. Rather, it is meant to be a starting point in which the reader is introduced to the overall configuration mechanisms within HiveManager at a high level. At the time of publishing, these are the steps needed to put in AP into operation. However, the nature of the rapid pace at which HiveManager is updated means that things could change that alter the configuration flow. It is also worth noting that this post utilizes the public cloud/Internet option for HiveManager. Although there are 3 different deployment options for HiveManager, this post utilizes the public cloud option. Configuration between the 3 different models is relatively the same.
